An axe is a tool commonly used for the purpose of cutting and chopping trees and splitting logs. It has a head of sharp metal attached to a wood handle (usually hickory), at an angle of ninety degrees. An axe is a tool which has been perfected over thousands of years.

There are many styles kinds of axes available these days, to meet the different requirements of users. One of them is the single-bit axe which is most popular. These axes are very useful for felling trees, or pruning and trimming them. Single-bit axes can be used for cutting and splitting wood, etc. The single-bit axes have only one edge for cutting which makes it very safe for the users. This is the primary reason these axes are most favored by the new and inexperienced woodcutters.

Axes are available in a wide range of varieties. People have many choices when it comes to selecting an axe pattern, (the type and shape of the cutting edge of the axe). Patterns differ from axe to axe. For instance, in case of single bit axes it may be Kentucky, Michigan, New Jersey, Connecticut or Dayton, whereas, standard axe patterns for double-bit axes include Reversible, Swamping, Michigan, and Western.

While selecting an axe, you should consider the handle of the axe very carefully. A common size for an axe handles is thirty six inches. Single-bit axes may have curved handles where the double-bit axes usually have handles that are straight.

You may decide on the selection of an axe by making a choice among the wide range of axes such as the log-splitting axes (useful for splitting wood), or the belt axes (such as the Boy Scout axe). These axes are specifically meant for serving a particular purpose, makes it more useful.

The most important features that control the quality of an axe is the materials used, the weight, and the method in which the parts have been attached. Axes can be easily purchased from mercantile stores, or even through the internet. However, it is best that one makes sure that the features are acceptable and safe for the user. Choosing the length of an axe is a compromise based on intended use and the size of the user.
